Hmm. I don't know why I wrote what I did. Here's how it really works:

You, the user, have no control over the format of the email.

Emails may be straight text or may be HTML, but that is controlled by the developers here. They determine that when they create the letter

Whether a template is html or text based is controlled by when the template was created. We have only just started creating html templates. HTML mails have been implemented as part of release 3.5 (currently in beta mode). Thus some of the emails for new functionality--subscriptions, etc. will be html formatted but not the old ones. There is not, or at least not yet, any plan to convert the old emails

You can't mistake an email that's in HTML format. When you're editing the mail you see the FCK editing toolbar with bullets and all the other formatting (the same toolbar you see when creating articles) and you can use html functionality in these mails

So what I wrote in the article about html and emails is totally incorrect, sorry. I hope it hasn't caused too much inconvenience.
(p.s. Article is now also updated to be clearer.)

I'm following this one up. I even remember changing the knowledgebase article for it when it was implemented. I'll get back to you.

it's in one of the user manual files. what is the issue with sending these emails? i've noticed an is_html flag in the database, and i've enabled it for at least one of the emails. additionally, i've started the editor class, and it appears properly when editing an email template -- why wont it send, specifically? is it a quick code fix that i can handle myself?

You can't send HTML emails.

> What does this mean? "Older emails are straight text
> (meaning all you can do is type text, while newer ones are HTML
> (meaning you can use bold, italic, bullets and other formatting)."

Sorry, where did you read it?

While on the topic of plain text outgoing emails... is there a way to force a line-break? My templates contain signatures that have 6 or 7 lines of credentials associated with the response, and although they are nicely formatted in the template, the resulting email always has the lines concatenated.

One more question - is there a way to incorporate the article templates into the responses?

A quick question... Is plain text the only option for email templates? Is there no way to add HMTL to the outgoing emails?
